SUGGESTIONS OF THINGS TO DO

We hesitate to tell people what they should do, especially when we don’t have knowledge of their communities or situations.  So these are just examples that people have done or are doing.  Be creative.

  1. Write to local or national media mentioning the problems with our focus on growth.

  2. If you are involved with a political organization, raise the issue of alternatives to growth with them.  Encourage political candidates to question our focus on GDP and suggest other indices for measuring well-being.

  3. Calculate your Ecological Footprint and make personal efforts to reduce it.  Do it with a group of people and see what you can change together.

  4. Create an ecological economics study group with friends and neighbors, using the film and Herman Daly’s books.

  5. Advocate taxes, incentives and other policies to reduce throughput.

  6. Oppose the construction of new data centers, especially for AI.

  7. Reduce your wardrobe and/or buy clothes secondhand.

  8. Help your city create an index of sustainable wellbeing or genuine progress indicator.

  9. Advocate for public transit, bike and walking paths, improved building insulation.

  10. Assess the most important natural capital in your community and work to protect it—bans on cutting tree canopy, etc.

  11. Join or create a Doughnut economics team and invite public officials to join, using Amsterdam as an example (See above photo).

  12. Encourage work-sharing, shorter work-time.

  13. In labor negotiations, choose more free time over wage increases.

  14. Join public demonstrations for sustainability, greater equity, etc.

  15. Pass a Rights of Nature proclamation in your city and protect habitat for urban animals.

  16. Advocate for national “Nature Needs Half,” or 30 by 30 initiatives to protect wildlife and habitat.
